For this month, I read Bystander by James Preller. This story is about a boy named Eric that is in seventh grade who needs new friends, until some “Cool kids” appear and try to mess with him, Eric ends up in the middle of bad things, and he decides that he doesn’t want to be “friends” with them anymore. But Eric doesn’t know what to expect as it is his fear of trying to not get beaten up by them.
I enjoyed this book, as the characters really demonstrated how hard life can get at an early age. I can relate how Eric didn’t know what to do in serious situations whether to stay or run away . Throughout the story he starts to show his true colors which led me to really like the book overall, normally it takes me at least 2 days to like a book but in the first 3 pages it was already really interesting!
My favorite character is Eric. Eric is my favorite character because he is mature and wise and thinks before he does things and when he feel pity for other he really does try to change or like help them put when they are in need. Eric changed from being a scaredy cat to standing up to others because he had enough of the bullying from the people who targeted him and the new kids.
My favorite quote from the book is on page 87 , “In the end we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.” This means that the comments from your enemies may hurt, however the hurt from friends not standing by and supporting you is forever remembered. The quote made me realize the value of friendship and that you should always stand up for not only yourself but for other associates.
